The Other Guest, Heidi Perks - 2.5/5
Laila is on holiday with her husband in a fancy resort when one of the guests ends up dead. It uncovers a myriad of secrets.
This took me AGES to get through. Didn't really care about the twists and turns because it was just quite meh. Disappointed with the ending too.
First Lie Wins, Ashley Elston - 4/5
Evie Porter has everything a girl could want: a doting boyfriend, a house with a picket fence, a fun group of friends. The only catch: Evie Porter doesn't exist.
This was a book club pick. Got into it quickly and then blitz through it. Liked the protagonist and wanted her to succeed. Lots of twists and a good ending.
The Last Devil To Die (Thursday Murder Club 4), Richard Osman - 5/5
Shocking news reaches the group - an old friend in the antiques business has been killed, and a dangerous package he was protecting has gone missing.
More of the same - British humour, loveable characters, and a good story with plenty of twists and turns. I think this series just got better and better with each new instalment. I haven't heard good things about Osman's new series though so I think I'll give that a miss.
Gods Old Time, Sebastian Barry - 2/5
A murder investigation leads a retired policeman to confront his past in a stately, often dreamlike novel about the impact of trauma on memory.
This was a book club pick. I found it hard to get into and there were lots of tangents in the plot that I didn't love. I found it hard to follow which meant it lacked punch for me.
The No Show, Beth O'Leary - 4/5
Three women who seemingly have nothing in common find that they're involved with the same man.
I've read quite a few Beth O'Leary books now and they're always nice and easy. I thought it was a bit bland at first but then something happens which grabbed my attention and I loved it from then on it. Not my favourite by her, but still a nice bit of light relief after Gods Old Time!
Romancing Mister Bridgerton, Julia Quinn - 3/5
This is the fourth novel of Quinn's Bridgerton series and follows the story of Colin and Penelope.
I read this purely because Netflix split the series in half and I wanted to know what was coming in part two. Turns out it didn't help much because there were a lot of differences between the book and the series - it's likle Netflix put the plot in a blender. I flew through it in a few day. Easy to read but nothing amazing, just like the TV series in my opinion. More on that here.
No One Saw A Thing, Andrea Mara - 4.5/5
Two children get on the train. Only one gets off... No one saw it happen.
Loved this. Lots of twists and turns with a great ending. Not quite 5/5 because at times it got a bit too convoluted.
Ugly Love, Coleen Hoover - 3/5
Friends with benefits, but it gets messy.
Easy holiday read by the pool. Classic Hoover plot really, but she does it well. Nothing incredible but entertaining.
November 9, Coleen Hoover - 3.5/5
Two people meet every year on the 9th of November.
Another easy pool-side read. Doesn't compare to One Day, despite the similar idea. Entertaining but nothing more.
The Bee Sting, Paul Murray - Didn't finish
The Barnes family are in trouble. They’re teetering on the brink of bankruptcy – and that’s just the start of their problems.
This was a book club pick. I really tried but just couldn't do it. It's a LONG book and I managed about 200 pages. I didn't like the characters, didn't get excited by the plot, and just didn't care enough to keep going.
Tomorrow and Tomorrow and Tomorrow, Gabrielle Zevin - 4.5/5
The novel follows the relationship between two friends who begin a successful video game company together.
This was a book club pick. I got into this really quickly and liked the characters despite their flaws. I'm not a gamer at all but those details did add to the plot. I liked the ending and I cried, which rarely happens!
The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo, Taylor Jenkins Reid - 5/5
It tells the story of a fictional Old Hollywood star, Evelyn Hugo, who, at age 79, gives a final interview to an unknown journalist, Monique Grant.
I loved this - the characters, the plot, the twists. It felt like you were learning about a real-life Hollywood star. I cried at this too.
Never Never, Colleen Hoover and Tarryn Fisher - 1.5/5
Charlie and Silas have been best friends since they could walk but one day they lose their memoriy of everything. They must work together to uncover the truth.
My final Hoover book of the year and it was a flop. It took me ages to get into, I didn't like the characters, and the ending was rubbish.
What A Way To Go, Bella Mackie - 3/5
A vile multimillionaire dies in mysterious circumstances and we follow the aftermath.
I loved Mackie's first book, How To Kill Your Family, but this didn't compare for me. I got into it quicky but I didn't like a single character so it just didn't grip me. The ending was just a bit meh too.
